For decades American workers have played by the rules and paid Social Security taxes in good faith, saving for their retirement. For more than half the people age 65 and up Social Security accounts for a majority of their income. For those same decades the Treasury Department has borrowed money from the Social Security trust fund to finance government operations. In the near future it is possible that the federal government will have to borrow several trillion dollars to bail out Social Security so that it can pay its promised benefits. How could this happen to our national retirement fund?

The Social Security trust fund is really only an accounting mechanism; unlike private pension plans it doesn’t consist of real economic assets that can be drawn down in the future to fund benefits. The trust fund shows how much the government has borrowed from Social Security, but it does not provide any way to finance future benefits. At some point, perhaps as early as 2017, according to the CBO, the Treasury would have to start repaying the billions it has borrowed from the trust fund over the past 25 years, driving the nation further into debt or forcing Congress to raise taxes.

Social security is on the verge of needing a government bailout to save it from itself. This is but one of the challenges we face as a nation, yet the political rhetoric is nothing short of pointing fingers at the other political party, the last administration, or the administration before that. I believe that we have a systemic problem and both parties have to be held accountable. It’s time to stop the finger pointing and get down to business. It’s time for the American people to say “enough is enough” and to elect representatives that have the people’s interest at heart.

In the words of Thomas Jefferson: “The true theory of our Constitution is surely the wisest and best …. When all government … shall be drawn to Washington as the centre of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another, and wilt become as … oppressive as the government from which we separated”.

I grew up in SP but never knew the origin of the name Meyler Street until I came to Arizona and started working for the Army at Ft Huachuca. A display in the hallway of my building states that Capt J J Meyler was with the Army Corps of Engineers, and he led the group of engineers that started construction of the breakwater in 1898. How great to see something about my home town every day I come into work.

The Distinctive Edge Gallery
Presents Solo Art Exhibition Jan. 27th – March 23rd, 2010

“California Visions”
Featuring Dolores Garren

The Distinctive Edge presents their next solo art exhibit in Rancho Palos Verdes. This show, “California Visions”, will feature oil paintings by local artist Dolores Garren. There will be an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, Feb. 6th, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday 10:00am – 6:00pm. A portion of all sales during this show will go to help the victims of Haiti through a reputable charity.
Garren is a painter of many subjects. Currently she has felt the need to record on canvas her impressions of nature. Walking along paths, observing rays of light peeking through trees, illuminating flowers or creating sparkle on water; they all compel her to put these images on canvas.
Without words, her brush, paint, and canvas allow her to capture fragments of God’s creation with a unique balance of color, light, shadow and delicate edges. She wants the viewer to experience beauty, harmony, tranquillity and atmosphere in her work.
Past artistic endeavors led up to her career in painting. One of which was teaching school in San Pedro and organizing art programs for 900 elementary school children. Observing children delight themselves with various art forms was a source of great pleasure for Garren. She belongs to several Art Associations and has been a Community Arts Representative for the Palos Verdes Art Center.
